Is the lack of a father figure the real reason?

The reason is not an absent parent it is the fact that parents are not allowed to discipline their kids like they used to in those days. A clip round the earhole or a slap on the legs didn't do you any harm but taught you right from wrong but parents don't do that these days and that's the reason why they are bringing up these demon children
