Is Cartagena, Colombia safe?

I was thinking about going to Cartagena, Colombia for about a month to study Spanish. Is this city safe?? I read that Colombia's murder rate is still about 5 or 6 times that of the US (even though it has dropped by about 1/2 in the last 7 years). Several Colombian people have told me I have nothing to worry about, but I am not sure.
